Michael "Mick" Doohan is a former Australian motorbike rider and a multiple champion. For the first time in 1974 at the age of nine he sat on a motorbike. In the late 1980s he proved his talent in the Australian and Japanese super bike championships and in 1988 in the newly developed super bike World championship. In 1989 he gave his debut in the motorbike World Championship on a 500cc as a factory driver and teammate of the World Champions Wayne Gardner and Eddie Lawson. In his debut year he finished in ninth place overall in the championship and improved steadily, ending up in the third place of the overall ranking in only his second year. In the same season he accomplished his first victory at the Hungaroring in Hungary.
1992 was supposed to be Dohan's year. He won five out of the first seven races and was leading the championship race by 53 points. But during the qualification at the 8th Grand Prix of the year in the Dutch Assen he had a bad accident and broke his right leg. As a result the season was over for him. In the following season he had a significant fitness deficit and only in the second half of the season was he able to regain his old performance. He eventually finished fourth in the overall ranking. In 1994 Doohan won nine out of fourteen races and accomplished his first World Championship in the 500cc class.
The following year he successfully defended his title and in 1996 he won his third title in a row, while being on the podium in twelve out of fifteen races. In 1997 he won his forth title in a row and by that he became one of the best motorbike riders of all times. Only Giacomo Agostini and Mike Hailwood achieved the same number of titles. In 1998 he ultimately crowned himself by winning his fifth World Championship.
